![]() ![]() Here is your starting place and be prepared for some sticker shock: As others said, find yourself a kart track. Some of my friends own car dealerships, others racing shops, still others are top level mechanics. I am also a private coach (it's like an instructor but focused on speed vs. I instruct at track days (for seat time in my own car). Now, we also do other things that are racing related. One of the other guys on that team (by a strange coincidence was also my surgeon who removed my tumor), paid. He got to drive without paying (didn't get paid mind you - just didn't have to front 10-20K to get in the car). I have one friend who won his class at the 24 hours at Sebring. I get out and race a shifter kart now and then, and I autocross, but with a family and a mortgage, there just isn't time anymore to focus on racing.Īs others have said, very few drivers actually get paid to drive, much less are able to make a living out of it. In the blink of an eye I'm now over 40 and I'm not racing. Had I listened, I might not be in WEC or F1 or Nascar, but I would be much closer than I am today. These are all things that were taught to me when I was much younger than you, and I didn't listen to any of it. There will be time for all that after you are getting paid to drive. No time for a girlfriend, no time for night out at the bar, no time for anything that isn't helping you get back on track. Focus all your energy on racing, and you might get lucky. You just need to always be in the right place at the right time. There are thousands of guys who have as much or more talent than you, and they all want that same seat. ![]() ![]() It's not what you know, it's who you know. You need a long track record of being consistently good on track, and a good reputation. Rarely does someone see you at a track one weekend and say, "Somebody get that guy in my racecar!". If you are shy or reclusive, you'll likely never be remembered. You'll need to be able to talk to anyone and everyone. Here in the US, you'll need a connection for sure. Your only option if you want to go where you say you want to go is to find a way to always be at a racetrack on weekends, get a job and save every dime for travel and a racecar, even a super cheap one. Your only choice is to FOCUS your entire life around getting seat time. With no money, and no family ties, you have a really tough road ahead. ![]()
